SAINT JAMES THE GREATER PARISH
BALIGUIAN, ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE
REV. FR. PHILIP BRYAN G. LUMENTAC
Traditionally, St. James has been known to be the defenders of Christians in their struggle against the Muslims. But in the present time, peace is what people desire. So, dialogue has taken the place of religious wars and St. James, the patron of the church in Baliguian, is prayed to protect both the Christians and the Muslims, and the peace of their place.
Baliguian was formerly administered from Siocon by the Claretians and then, PIME Fathers, as a mission area. The latter developed it into a parish such that when the diocesan clergy took over anew the stewardship of Siocon somtetime in mid-80’s, priests began to reside in the area. Fr. Sotico Florida and Fr. Hamilcar Blanco followed up what the previous missionaries had laid down in terms of preparing the place to become a parish. Since then up to the present, there is always a resident priest assigned to take care of the Christian flock of this place.
