Parish History

The barangay of Galas can spell out victory or defeat to any one. It is one of the barangays of the city of Dipolog quite densely populated.
Saint Joseph, the Spouse of the Blessed Virgin is the patron Saint of its inhabitants. Through the consolidated efforts of the believers, the chapel was built along the national highway.

Under the pastoral care of the Most Rev. Felix S. Zafra, then Bishop and parish priest of the cathedral parish, the chapel of Saint Joseph was given a monthly schedule of the Eucharistic celebration. Rev. Fr. Jesus B. Tuquib, now Archbishop of Cagayan de Oro, actively organized the people. Different seminars were given and proper orientation to chapel leaders were provided. The seed of faith started to flourish.

Desirous to become independent from the cathedral, the mother parish, the faithful continually nurture their faith through the able-support of so many priests like Fr. Hamilcar Blanco, Msgr. Salvador Mora, Fr. Jaime Parnada, Fr. Luis Lapinid, Fr. Expedito Caermare, Fr. Malaquias Fuerzas, and so many.

Now, it is a quasi-parish administered by Fr. Gonzalo T. Villamil, Jr. As the believers grow not only in faith but also in number, the small chapel can no longer accommodate its faithful. Thus the construction of a bigger church in a bigger lot. The lot was purchased through the generosity of the faithful themselves with the support of the Most Rev. Felix S. Zafra.

The quasi-parish will be canonically erected as Saint Joseph, the Spouse of Mary Parish on October 20, 1992. It will then take the pride as “Silver Jubilee Souvenir Parish” as its erection coincides with the silver jubilee celebration of the diocese.
